It is the mission of Historic St. Mary’s City to protect and preserve the history and archaeology of Maryland’s first capital, which dates back to colonial America. They use this scenic and historical site to promote education and enjoyment for all!
About
Historic St. Mary’s City has been recognized as a National Historic Landmark since 1969, and it is one of southern Maryland’s leading tourism attractions. Today, HSMC is dedicated to studying and interpreting the lives of those who lived in the area during the early colonial days of America. This includes the ancestors of Native American groups and European colonists from all walks of life who made the voyage to make a new home in America. These historical people gave us stories of opportunity and oppression!
Research
The 2022 field season of research with St. Mary’s College of Maryland is focused on Historical Archaeology. St. Mary’s Fort is recognized as the first major stronghold of the state of Maryland. This project offers an opportunity to learn about the nature of the historical colonialism of Maryland and its effects on the state today.
Getting Involved
There are lots of ways for you to get involved in the mission of the Historic St. Mary’s City! You can become a member for as low as $50. Members get special benefits, such as free admission, shop discounts, and more the higher up they go in membership levels. If you aren’t interested in becoming a member, you can simply make a donation! You can also get involved by becoming a volunteer. Volunteering positions are for people of all ages.
