If there’s anything that could signal the arrival of fall more reliably than the changing colors of the leaves, it could only be the return of pumpkin spice lattes to coffee house menus. It’s an autumn staple at this point, but you don’t have to head down to the coffee shop every time you want to enjoy those familiar fall flavors. Brew up your favorite blend and try out this recipe to make your own pumpkin spice latte at home.
Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own latte:
- 2 cups milk
- 2 to 4 tablespoons pumpkin puree
- 1 to 3 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice, plus a dash more for garnish
- 1/2 cup hot coffee
- Whipped cream for garnish
Making the Latte
In a saucepan, blend the pumpkin puree, sugar, and milk on medium heat. The mixture should warm up, but don’t let it boil. Once its hot, take the saucepan off the heat and whisk in the coffee, vanilla extract, and spices. This will make a couple of servings, and after you pour some in a mug, top it with whipped cream and a dash of pumpkin spice.
Mixing Your Own Spices
If you don’t have a shaker of pumpkin spice, you might still be able to mix up a batch from the spices you do already have in your kitchen. You’ll just need cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, and ginger. Cinnamon is usually the largest component in this mix, but feel free to mix the spices according to your own preference.
Suggestions and Notes
While the recipe author suggests whole milk or 2 percent, you could also use a non-dairy substitute like almond milk. This might impact the sweetness of the latte, but you likely won’t need more than three tablespoons of sugar in any case. The original recipe only called for a couple of tablespoons of pumpkin, but home cooks suggested adding more if you want a more prominent pumpkin flavor.
